Catching up on the latest films...

Well… since it’s the holidays and all, I decided I should catch up on the latest movies. Actually, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the holidays or not…I always try to watch the latest movies and since I have no interest in forking out 10 dollars for a movie I may end up hating, I have always resorted to downloading these new movies. Yes, yes… I know it’s illegal and unethical but come on!! In this day and age, everyone illegally downloads stuff whether it’s music, movies, games or even computer programs. Besides, I never did care much for this sort of ethical behavior anyway (maybe this is the reason why I was close to failing the subject… but whatever!). But that’s besides the point, anyway I’ve always up so much space!! So, I’ve finished watching ‘Twilight’ which stars Robert Pattinson (he was Cedric Diggory in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’), ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ which stars Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson and Queen Latifah and ‘Australia’ which stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and finally in the spirit of Christmas, I watched ‘Four Christmases’ which has Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughan in it. I will review each movie but I must say these reviews are my personal opinions and my opinions may definitely differ from some people… Anyway, since I was the one watching these movies, I’m entitled to have my own judgment about them. downloaded these new movies and as soon as I’m done watching them, I delete them which saves a lot of space because I used to buy the DVDs and these DVDs always take up so much space!! So anyway here are my thoughts on these movies...

Ah… ‘Twilight’… I’ve read the book and I definitely think that Robert Pattinson is really gorgeous and he does sort of resemble Edward Cullen for me but I’ll be frank… I thought the movie was really boring and I’m so happy I didn’t actually watch it in the cinema because it would have been a total waste of money and time. I mean whenever I go to the cinema, more often than not, I end up shopping so I’m thankful I did not succumb to the temptation of drooling over some guy’s face on the big screen because I could have easily spent 200 dollars that day. The 200 dollars will be put to much better use for my trip to Genting Highlands. As gorgeous as Robert is, I will not spend 10 dollars (15 if I add popcorn and water!) just to drool over his handsome but blank face. I’m only willing to do that for Johnny Depp! (Not that Johnny’s movies are ever boring... his movies are usually either interesting or disturbing in some ways but I digress.) Anyway, I sorta enjoyed the book but the movie leaves much to be desired. Although, I have to say, it’s doing really well in the box office maybe because of all the teen girls flocking to the cinema to drool over Robert’s good looks. As much as I may love watching a handsome vampire, Edward Cullen is much too tame for my taste. I prefer my vampires a little more bloodthirsty and sarcastic (Mmm… Spike). Seriously, I’ve only watched the movie once and I definitely do not plan to watch the movie again unless of course I really have nothing better to do but I seriously doubt it.

I must admit, I have always been a fan of Dakota Fanning. I mean she was phenomenal in ‘I am Sam’ and she was the reason I watched ‘Cat in the Hat’ which by the way sucks balls and Mike Myers was really creepy in that role but again I digress. I’ve read ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ and although I found it an interesting read I never thought I would watch the movie. But as soon as I found out Dakota Fanning would be in it, I told myself I must make a point to watch it. I mean it even has Queen Latifah in it and I’ve always liked her movies. And I have to say, I enjoyed the movie very much. As usual Dakota impressed me with her acting and Queen Latifah was superb in her role. Even though, I was never a fan of Jennifer Hudson or Alicia Keys, they didn’t annoy me. But the star is definitely Dakota and this girl is seriously talented! I just hope that she won’t go the Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears or even the Miley Cyrus route. But I don’t think there’s much likelihood in that scenario as these ‘lovely ladies’ ( I use the term mildly) started their careers in Disney while Dakota started her career acting in a serious movie. Besides, I’ve heard this girl is smart! She’s fourteen years old and she’s in the 10th Grade. Now I did not study in the American system but I think she must be ahead by at least a year! Time will tell whether she’ll be going the Reese Witherspoon route or she’ll follow Lindsey Lohan’s path.

Mmm… Hugh Jackman… 2008 Sexiest Man Alive… He’s the only reason I watched Australia. I like Nicole Kidman but over the years she looks more and more like a plastic doll to me. I must admit I had very little expectation for this movie and it’s sad that even with such low expectations I did not enjoy the movie. I can’t really put my finger in it but it really felt like something was missing which is a little sad because I enjoyed ‘Moulin Rouge’ very much. The cinematography was good and the story is good…on paper. I guess it just didn’t compel me and I don’t think I’m the only one because I’ve had a few people tell me that they didn’t love the movie either. Hugh Jackman looked amazingly yummy in it and Nicole didn’t look too plastic either but I definitely wasn’t wowed by it. I mean it’s Ok and I liked the movie but I just didn’t love it. I enjoyed it more than ‘Twilight’. (That’s a good thing, right?) Maybe I should watch it again and try to understand what the hell was wrong with it…

Finally, ‘Four Christmases’ which stars the lovely Reese Witherspoon and the tall and occasionally funny Vince Vaughan. I had medium expectations before I watched this movie because I was never much of a Vince fan in the first place but I’ve always liked Reese’s performances. But I’ll be honest… I didn’t laugh much if at all. Reese and Vince just didn’t click for me. I mean they both can be funny at times (individually) but they just didn’t give the couple vibe to me. The supporting cast was mediocre and the plot wasn’t that funny or interesting. It’s an OK Christmas movie but again I wouldn’t watch in the cinema and I’m happy that I didn’t. I’ll probably love the next Reese Witherspoon movie but this one just didn’t work for me because Reese and Vince just didn’t have much chemistry (to me at least).

Well… I liked one out of the four movies. That can’t be too bad, right? Anyway I’ll be watching the new Jim Carrey movie next and maybe the new Keanu Reeves movie. I’ve never been a fan of either of them so maybe if I watch these two movies with little to no expectations, I’ll end up enjoying them. Who knows? I may even end up crushing on one of them (Though I highly doubt it… Johnny will always be the one for me).
